The Many Positions to Learn
The Many Positions to Learn
In ROTC there are many things to learn in the form of flight positions. The main positions to be learned is Commander, Deputy, Physical Fitness Officer, Academics Officer, Safety Officer, Drill and Ceremonies, and finally Standardization Officer. They all play a pivotal role in making the flight or squadron function properly. Luckily, I've been able to learn each of these positions individually.
Commander
The head of the squadron or flight, they say the commands and insure the orders of the day are carried out in the quickest and best way of doing things. Nobody does anything unless the Commander says to do it. I figured I would choose this topic because I was selected to be the Flight Commander this week. I was given the responsibility of assigning all of the other positions.
Deputy
The deputy has the duty of keeping everyone accounted for, if someone is missing it is their job to know and relay that to the Commander. The deputy insure that's everyone is where they are supposed to be, or know where they are.
Physical Fitness Officer
The PFO takes control whenever any exercise is done by the flight or squadron. It is there job to make sure everyone does exercises properly and in sync. They must be VERY VERY loud. This position specifically was one I struggled with in the beginning because it was the first position I was assigned when I joined. It is daunting to get in front of a large group of cadets and be forced to know long sets of verbiage to insure everything is done perfectly.
Academics Officer
A fairly easy position arguably, mostly the goal of the academics officer is to insure everyone else knows what they should know. Whether that be Warrior Knowledge (Quotes and important information associated with the program. They help keep everyone in the know.
Safety Officer
Another generally easy position to be in. This one is definitely more important because safety is always paramount. This means making sure everyone is hydrating properly and resting when they need it. It just requires vigilant and proper communication to keep everyone safe, hence its name.
Drill and Ceremonies
The goal of the Drill and Ceremonies Officer is to help teach and educate other cadets in the squadron or flight know the proper way to do drill. Often times this requires review of the Drill & Ceremonies book which is quite lengthy.
Standardization Officer
This is actually a surprisingly difficult position when assigned. The standardization officer has to make sure everyone in the flight has everything exactly the same, down to the same direction that water bottles face or what pockets specific things go in. They often get the most trouble for small things. Speaking from experience, it is often not fun to be the standardization officer.
Overview
Anyways everybody that's a general overview of some of the leadership positions that cadets will experience in ROTC or from what I assume USAFA is like. They are all extremely imperative to the success of the unit and even as difficult as some positions may be they are all very important.
Anyways goodbye everyone see y'all in the next post.
